Flavorful Low-Sodium Family Meals

SALT! I have a love/hate relatonship with salt. I love the taste of it, but it hates me!! I know this because of the way it makes me bloat and the terrible occasional tummy pangs. Have you ever tried to amp up the sexiness when you are bloated?!?! Yeah, that's what I thought!!

Then this miracle in a bottle came my way! Mrs. Dash!! Seriously, this miracle worker has saved so many "tasteless" dishes and turned them into gourmet MASTERPIECE!!! I love them all, but my absolute favorite!! Fiesta Lime!!! HELLO, TASTY MEXICAN DISHES!! OLE!!

Here is my favorite recipe that uses Mrs. Dash Fiesa Lime....south of the border style!!

Rice and Bean Burritos

2 cups cooked brown rice
15 oz black beans, no salt added
1/2 cup salsa
1 small onion, diced
15 oz diced tomatoes with green chilies, no salt added
1 TB Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime

Saute onions until golden brown. Add black beans, salsa, diced tomatoes and Mrs. Dash.

Bring to a boil.

Reduce Heat. Simmer for 5 minutes.

Add cooked brown rice and heat through!

Serve with your favorite tortillas and toppings. Fresh avocado goes great with this as well with as pico de gallo. Use some Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime in some guacomole instead of some salt for an extra kick.

Here are some more suggestions for ways to incorporate Mrs. Dash into your favorite meals, side dishes and snacks.

* Slice up some fresh tomatoes and skip the salt. Instead, use Mrs. Dash. Of course use my favorite flavor: Fiesta Lime!!!

*Spinach!! My kids hate eating their greens, but when we melt just a pat of butter and heat up the spinach in a wok: FANTASTIC!! We add Mrs. Dash right before serving....they gobble it up!

*I use the orginal blend of Mrs. Dash in my Alfredo Sauce. It really makes it pop and I don't nearly bloat as much. Now if only I could quit eating so much of that pasta, is there a Mrs. Dash for that?

*Another tip on substituting something for salt, but not on the flavor. Using fresh herbs is a great way!! They don't have to be expensive either! I have bought basil plants at my local farmer's market for under three dollars. I get a lot of basil from the plant as well. I use the basil in all my homemade pasta sauces as well as sandwiches! YUMMY!!

*One last tip is to take a nice, crusty loaf of bread. I like to use Italian or Sourdough bread. I lightly drizzle the bread with olive oil and sprinkle Mrs. Dash Garlic and Herb seasoning. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes! The end product tastes like HEAVEN!!!

I wrote this blog post while participating in the Mrs. Dash and TwitterMoms blogging program for a chance to get a $50 gift card. For more information on how you can participate, click here.

99% Savings at Safeway!!

Everything in the picture cost me a grand total of $1.25!!!
RIDICULOUS!!!!

Safeway has a great Buy 4 Save $4 Promo. In itself this is a great promotion, but there are also 2 Catalinas that coincide with it.

Nature Valley
Buy 5 Earn $3.50 OYNO

Fruit Roll-ups

To maximize savings I suggest buying 5 and then rolling the CAT's and so on. I did 2 more transactions today similar to the one pictured above. Total OOP less than $5!!

Great time to stock up on sweet extras for after school, practices and donations.

It's Not Just About Coupons....

Yeah, that's ME!!! This is my signature hand gesture when I rock out!!

ANYWHO, my point of this post is coupons AREN'T always needed to get a good deal.

Case in point: Warped Tour 2010. I took my husband yesterday and I didn't even purchase the tickets. We both got in free and the best part is we both were able to go ONSTAGE to see Reel Big Fish (his favorite band)

My point is that it pays to enter in those REDUNKULOUS radio contests! They actually pay off, my experience yesterday is a testament of that. Coupons are not a necessity when finding a great deal!  Winning contests, attending free day events, thrift stores, clearance racks...all these are AWESOME ways to score killer deals without using coupons.

What is your best deal scored without the use of a coupon?

King Sooper's 7/31/10

Total OOP: They paid me $.14
Total Savings: $43.00

These were my best shops of the week and really my only hard core couponing trips. This month I have hardly time to breathe and missed some really great sales. There is always next time, right ;)

I probably won't be on much until school starts, but then I am ready for some POWER COUPONING!!!

King Sooper's 8/1/10

Total OOP: $10.01
Total Saved: $51.00!!!!

Target Run 8/3/10

Total OOP: $15.50
Total Saved: $43.00

Walgreens Run 8/1/10

This was my Walgreens run for the week.
Total OOP: $7.00
Total Saved: $55.00

As Promised....Tammy's Terrific Pizza Crust

Sorry for the delay, it's been one heck of a busy week.

4 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

1/4 cup white sugar

3 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast

2 teaspoons salt

11 cups flour (I use whole wheat and it works fine)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

6 tablespoons margarine

1 tablespoon cornmeal

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

1.Dissolve yeast and sugar in 1 1/2 cups warm water. Let stand 5 to 6 minutes, until mixture is foamy.

2.In a large bowl, mix together half the flour, remaining water, garlic powder, salt, oregano, and margarine. Add yeast mixture, and stir to combine. Work in remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time until a soft dough forms.

3.Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface, and knead for 10 minutes. Put dough in large plastic bag, and place in refrigerator. Let rise until tripled in bulk. *before bagging it, brush it with olive oil so it won't stick*

4. Before you add any topping, put the dough in an unlit oven for 45-55 minutes. This is the second proof and it gives it a nice fluffy texture.

5.Bake at 450 degrees F for 18 to 20 minutes.

This is enough dough for 6 crusts. These can be frozen after the first rise. Just roll in plastic wrap, then aluminum foil and put in Ziploc bags.

Potpourri....

Today I did most of my shopping and WOO WEE did I buy a lot and of course spent a lot :(

I spent almost 2 week's worth of my budget, but don't fret!! I stocked up on meat for the whole month!!

Here is the bulk of my sales:

20 lbs of chicken ( total close to $25)
12 lbs of turkey ($12)
lots of wheat pasta!!
25 cans of diced tomatoes ( these are $.39 each at King Sooper's)
Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables
Shredded Cheese

I then ran out of a lot of staples and there hasn't been any HOT sales or even coupons to get these cheap.

Olive Oil
Cooking Spray
Jalapenos
Plus lots more....

In our house, we try to really use the best quality we can. I never cook from a box and must of our meals are fresh and homemade. This is why my budget per week is higher than the typical couponer!!

Target Run

This was a quickie Target Run ( we ran out of T.P. and a Target is right by my house)

I paid less than $15.00 for all that and $9 of it was just for the Charmin!!!

This is what I got:

3 Lysol sheets $2.19
I used $2/1 coupons I received from writing manufacturer = $.19 each

3 Crystal Light Pure Fitness $1.97
used 3 $2/1 coupons from vocal point = FREE

Charmin = $8.99

Spidermen underwear = clearanced for $1.72

Maybeline Eyeshadow = clearanced for $1.04

I found these things at the $1 spot:

1 Pre-K workbook
1 card making kit
1 utensil holder

I saved a total of $30!!

What I love about the dollar spot is that many of the things can be re purposed for something else. For example, the card kit I actually turned into small wall hangings for my kitchen. A girl has to have her PINK!!!!

Have you seen any good deals at Target lately??

Jackie Warner

I am a big reality t.v, my guilty pleasure, fan. I loved watching 'Workout" on Bravo, so I was stoked to see Jackie Warner put out a new book and workout DVD. I checked out the book from my local library (I hardly ever buy books or DVDs unless they are reduced greatly!!) I didn't know what to expect as most "diet" books I read I quit reading after the first few chapters. This one I almost finished!!!!

I really loved this book! There are no uber expensive foods to buy and no crazy drinks to gulp down. She has really done all the work for you!

2 Week Jump start: I love this part!! Basically you eat what you normally do, but you add in a few foods.
1. 1 cup oatmeal
2. 2 eggs with no added fat
3. 3 liters of water
4. 2 servings fruit
5. 2 servings vegetables.

BRILLIANT!! I started this today and my sugar cravings were greatly reduced!!!

5/2 Meal Plan: Love this plan. Essentially you eat clean for 5 days in a row and then the last two days you have 2 "treat" meals not exceeding 1500 calories. Very doable!!!

Short workouts: I love this idea!  I always wondered how people can spend 2 hours a day in the gym and not change their appearance!!  She believes intensity and quality over quantity. I like this idea....I mean who really wants to spend 2 hours in the gym, I mean REALLY!!!!

That's my review, in a nutshell. Oh, I have been enjoying family time for the past few weeks, so hopefully I can get back into my blogger groove!!

Cheap Entertainment

It's not a big surprise that I HATE paying retail price for ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING!! It's such a thrill to know something is really pricey, but to snag it at a killer price, often times FREE!! This brings me to the topic of cheap entertainment. With 4 kids things can be quite pricey so I am always looking for it on the cheap. Here is a list of how we entertain, but keep it light on the pocketbook!!

**Free Days! The first Saturday of the month Denver Art Museum, Colorado History Museum and a few others have FREE admission. The first Tuesday of the month, The Children's Museum has free day from 4 p.m - 8 p.m.. Also, The Denver Zoo, The Museum of Nature and Science and The Botanical Gardens have free days. Check with your local communities. Many of these attractions offer free or discounted days.

**Movies!! We visit the local "Dollar Theatre." Wait a few weeks to watch your favorite movie, and pay only $2.50 to see it!! If we went to a "normal" theatre it costs at least $50 and that's just for tickets. This way we spend $15.00!!!! Check your local theatres for matinee pricing

**Water park!! Elitches and Water World costs us over $200 for just one day!! NUTS!!!! However there are parks that have their own mini water sprinklers, slides and the such for just $2.00 a person!! Such a better price!! However, if you do love Six Flags, get a few season passes. It saves a BOAT LOAD!!!

Blazin' Buffalo Chicken Pizza

Want something hot? A lil comfort food with a kick? Well then I have the perfect dish for you. It's spicy, cheesy and easy on the wallet. Plus, this bad boy can be tailored to your specific tastes!!

1 dough ( I use Pillsbury because it's super cheap)
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast
1 TB Montreal seasoning
2 TB EVOO
1 cup tomato sauce
1 TB hot sauce (I use Tabasco)
2 TB Worsherire sauce
4 TB butter ( I use Smart Balance, but any will do)

1 cup Monterey Jack cheese

Additional toppings: We also add melted butter, garlic and Parmesan cheese around the crust!! So yummy!!

Red and orange sweet peppers
onions
cilantro

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Put the olive oil and seasoning on chicken breast. Cook on skillet or indoor grill until done.

Meanwhile, melt butter over medium heat. Add tomato sauce, worsherire sauce, Tabasco and combine.

Now that the chicken has cooled a bit, cut it up and add to the sauce mixture. Combine and put on your pizza dough. Add cheese. Put on additional veggies!

Cook for 18 minutes!!!

This also tastes awesome with crumbled blue cheese and with a side of ranch!!!

Dieters: You have been warned!

New Safeway Coupon Policy

Safeway has put out a new and very detailed coupon policy. While there are some drawbacks (no more b1G1 coupons on b1g1 sales), there are some wonderful new inlusions. Safeway will now take other retailerscatalinas. Can you say Walgreens RR!!!!!

Manufacturer and Store Coupons:

1. Coupons are redeemable only by a customer purchasing the specific brands and product(s) stated on the coupon, with the face value of the coupon deducted from your retail or club card price.

3. Coupons are subject to advertised offer limitations and all limitations and restrictions on coupon.

4. Coupons cannot be applied against the free item received in any offer where a customer buys one or more items to get one or more items free.

6. Coupons have no cash value.

7. Accepted coupons must be Manufacturer or Safeway store issued coupons.

8. Safeway will accept valid manufacturer coupons that display another retailer’s logo or name.

9. Safeway will accept valid Catalina manufacturer coupons that are issued to a customer by another retailer.

10. The coupon must have an expiration date and be presented within valid dates.

13. All sales taxes are paid by the customer at the full value of the item.

14. All bottle deposits on the purchased and free items are paid by the customer.

15. Safeway reserves the right to refuse any coupons at its discretion.

Doubling of Coupons:

22. Check with your local store regarding ‘double coupon’ advertised promotions where customers will receive double the coupon face value off the regular or club card price up to the advertised limit. Not all locations offer double coupon promotions. Limitations and restrictions for double coupon promotions may change at any time. Changes will be posted in store only.

Coupon Stacking: (Hawaii stores only)

23. Safeway does not allow a customer to redeem two or more manufacturer coupons against the same item in a single transaction.

24. Coupon stacking policies for manufacturer coupons apply to paper and electronic coupons that have been loaded to a club card.

26. Rainchecks expire 90 days from the date issued and are accepted at any Safeway store.

27. We reserve the right to limit Rainchecks quantities based on product availability and advertised limits.

28. Rainchecks can be written for a limit of no more than 3 items unless otherwise stated in the advertisement.

We may change this policy at any time. All coupon redemptions are subject to the policy in effect at time of redemption. Policy changes may not be advertised. The current policy will be posted at the customer service area in each store.
